School uniform is compulsory at Orakei School and can be purchased at the school office.
Students are encouraged to wear black or navy socks with black shoes in winter and sandals in summer.

STATIONERY

Parents are advised of the stationery needs for each classroom which can be purchased at the school office.

SCHOOL DONATION

Donations are vital to the wellbeing and life of our school and are used to support and sustain learning programmes to a consistently high standard.

HOMEWORK

Homework is a daily part of classroom learning programmes. It may include reading, spelling or mathematics, depending on the individual class expectations. Year 1 and 2 students take a reading book home daily and may have basic sight vocabulary to learn.

Lunch can be ordered daily before school at the office.

ROAD SAFETY AND CROSSING

Orakei School is bordered by busy suburban roads. Students are crossed in a supervised way at Grace St and Coates Ave by the  teachers and senior students on crossing duty.

ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL

Parents are asked to notify the school office if their child is absent or late. Parents requiring their children to leave school during regular school hours should notify the class teacher in advance.

ACCIDENTS AND ILLNESSES

Teachers are formally trained in First Aid practices to manage any accidents that may occur at school. Parents will be contacted if children become sick at school and need to go home.

WHOLE SCHOOL EVENTS

The school organises whole school events throughout the year. They are an opportunity for all of us to spend time together as a school community.

ASSEMBLIES

Parents are encouraged to attend our school assemblies which are held every Friday at 2.15p.m. They are an important weekly event where class items are presented by the students and school achievements are celebrated.

SCHOOL ROUTINES

We have ‘an open door policy’ and parents are welcome to visit the classrooms or contact the teacher if there is a concern or query about their child. Teachers are available before and after school except for Tuesday mornings and afternoons when we have our staff meetings. Parents wishing to view their child’s book work are asked to make a time with the teacher.

LIBRARY

Each class has a library day. Please support good library practices by reminding your child to return their book on their library day.

EDUCATIONAL TRIPS

During the year, trips may be organised as part of the learning programmes. These may includ a charge pending on the nature of the trip. Parent help is needed to assist with the appropriate adult-student ratio required.

SPORTS

Students can participate in a number of sports. Our tennis courts are used to teach hockey and tennis, and Ripper Rugby is available through the Teachers’ Eastern programme on a weekly basis as part of our Physical Education programme.
Gymnastics is also offered as an after school sport twice a week in the school hall.

SKIDS – AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMME

A well supervised after school programme is independently operated at school on a daily basis. This is available for all students between the hours of 3.30p.m – 6.00p.m.

SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMES:

READING SUPPORT

Six year old students who need additional assistance in reading, are supported by our Reading Recovery programme. This is a daily, thirty minute reading and writing programme available to students for approximately twenty weeks.
It is facilitated by a trained Reading Recovery teacher and designed to accelerate progress in literacy.

ESOL PROGRAMME
The ESOL programme caters for students from Years 2-8. It is closely related to classroom learning programmes and is designed to support students’ English language and learning development, including their cultural adjustment. Students receive 2-3 sessions a week in a withdrawal situation which are run by a qualified ESOL teacher.

GIFTED AND TALENTED
This programme is for gifted and talented students and runs once a week. It aims to develop divergent thinking, problem solving skills and creativity. This class is facilitated by an external teacher.

MATHLETICS
‘Mathletics’ is a supplementary programme available for students Years 1-8.  It is designed to increase interest and enjoyment in mathematics and build on numeracy skills.
Students can participate in ‘mathletics’ during a lunch period and at our “Mathletics After School Club” which is every Thursday after school.

MUSIC PROGRAMME
