Kia Ora & Greetings

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to our fourth newsletter for the term.

School Family Picnic Evening

We had a wonderful turnout to our family picnic evening and luckily the weather held out, though it was only the brave ones who entered the pool. Our Board members and their helpers did a great job of catering for all our guests and our supportive PTA were both helping out and fundraising. There was a lovely family atmosphere around the school and this is one of Orakei’s strong points in that our size allows us to create a feeling that is not always possible in larger schools.

National Standards

These were passed into law in an amendment of the Education Act in Dec 2008 with the aim of consistently defining student achievement nationally. All schools across New Zealand are currently reviewing what assessment tools they use and how they report to parents. The criteria for reporting to parents includes reports that are in plain language, are written twice a year and indicate what the student must do for the next step in their learning. The Education Review Office has identified that most schools (Boards, Principals, Staff) will require external facilitation for effective self-review of what schools are currently doing. Orakei School is currently reviewing its assessment and planning format and as the year progresses and in consultation with our community, will review its reporting format.

Board of Trustees Elections

Orakei School is fortunate to have a dedicated Board of Trustees, the majority of who are standing for election again this year. If you are interested in becoming part of our Board or would like to find out more about the roles and responsibilities of Board members, pick up an information pack from the school office. Nominations close on April 27th at noon and the election will be held on May 11th.

Head Lice Alert

Head lice has been detected. If your child brings home a notice please check, treat if necessary, sign and return the form. Follow up checks will be made and parents will be contacted to collect their child if treatment has not happened as the only way to prevent head lice spreading is to check and treat all students and their families. Please be reassured that Head Lice prefer clean hair and it has nothing to do with cleanliness. Other facts are they DO NOT swim, jump or fly, they are transmitted by head to head contact. They need to be on a human scalp to survive. Your support during this alert is greatly appreciated.

Swimming

Please find our swimming

Wednesday Reading Clinic

Reading Clinic will start in Term 2.
