Powhiri at Orakei Marae

Thank you to the Board members and parents who came along to the powhiri at the Marae last Friday. Our students, as usual, were wonderful ambassadors for our school and sang beautifully. We were warmly welcomed by the Marae Iwi and it was a lovely occasion for families to come together to acknowledge and celebrate all that is good in our community.

New Students

Welcome to the following students who have started this week and have settled in so quickly to our school community:

Manaia Te Ua-Popata R.8

Linda-Kiki Motuhavili R.8

Sun Hats

New stock has arrived and are available from the office for $10.00

The effects of lateness in the morning.

Lateness is a stumbling block for student achievement. When children arrive late into class, even by five minutes, they may lag the other students for the rest of the day. They have missed out on the social interactions that take place between friends in the morning before class time and this may cause issues around building friendships. They also cause disruption to the class, when the teacher who has to instruct the child who comes late and this disadvantages the other children.

In summary, for your child to have a chance at being successful, they need to be in class on time and ready to start learning with the rest of the students.

What do missed days at school or starting late in the morning mean for your child?

When students miss school due to illness or other reasons, some will fill in the missed learning time on their own, some will stumble, falter and be confused for the remainder of that unit. Their learning suffers. You can assist by making sure your child is ready for school every day – rested, well-nourished and equipped – and is absent only when absolutely essential. That way we can all make best use of the learning time we have at our disposal and every student can make the progress we all are striving for.

The dire effects of absenteeism

Research indicates that, in a year with five lost school days, the number of children who met learning targets was lower than in years with no school days lost. In brief, student time on task is important to learning. Every day your child is out of school, for whatever reason, his or her learning achievement suffers

Gymnastics

We have an enthusiastic bunch of students from year one to year eight who are going through their paces every Thursday after school. Training starts after school, finishes at 4.30 and costs $2 per session.

Soccer

Our soccer coach Manuel has started his training sessions and already our students skill level has improved. It is good to see our students actively participating in our physical education programme.

Fruju Friday is back!

The PTA will be selling Frujus for $2 each Friday again this term.

Please pay at the office before school on Friday and your iceblock will be delivered to your room at lunchtime.
